Welcome to Chemistry
Course Details
Why choose this course?
Chemistry is involved in every aspect of our daily lives. Chemistry explains the behaviour of all the materials around us from the strength of the bricks which enable our houses to stand up, to the fuel which keeps our houses warm and powers cars, trains, buses and aeroplanes. Chemistry keeps our bodies moving, produces drugs to make us healthy and clothes to protect us from the weather. Chemistry produces detergents to clean clothes, people, houses and many other things. Chemistry causes pollution and then helps to counteract it. Chemistry not only helps you understand the world, it also opens up a world of opportunities.
Course Content/Main Topics
Module 1 - Development of practical skills – this module underpins the whole of the specification, and covers the practical skills that students should develop throughout the course. The practical skills in this module can be assessed within written examinations and (for A Level only) within the Practical Endorsement.
Module 2 - Foundations in Chemistry covering concepts required throughout the remaining modules
Module 3 - Periodic Table and Energy
Module 4 - Core Organic Chemistry
Module 5 - Physical chemistry and transition elements
Module 6 - Organic chemistry and analysis
Careers and Higher Education
Chemistry is an excellent qualification for those wishing to go on to Higher Education courses in Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences and Materials Science. It is a course requirement for Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy and Dentistry. Chemistry is also relevant for students thinking of working in forensics, art restoration, animal health and photography. The skills developed and demonstrated in Chemistry are transferable to other areas such as: accountancy, marketing, commerce, teaching, television and management.
Qualification
A Level
Assessment
Students will be assessed in two exams in their first year. These are called Breadth and Depth Papers. Each Paper is 70 marks and covers all of the modules from Year 12 teaching. The new design specifically requires students to recall, apply and synthesise content taught throughout the year (module 1-4). Each module has a set of complimentary Student Assessment Groups (PAGs), which are the practical assessments. These require the students to successfully complete practical activities along with a set of questions. These questions could be drawing diagrams, analysing graphs or data, or simply evaluating the experiment they have just completed. The practical assessment is separate from the examination. Upon completing the course, the students will achieve a grade along with a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ for their practical skills. Students will have 3 exams in Summer Year 13, which will cover the content from both years (module 1-6). Periodic Table, Elements & Physical Chemistry and Synthesis & Analytical techniques both carry 37%, and are worth 100 marks; Unified Chemistry carries 26% and is worth 70 marks. PAGs which are completed in Year 2, only focus upon the content taught in Year 2, and follow the same route as Year 1.
Entry Requirements
Grade 7 achieved in Double Science or 7 achieved in Chemistry.
Grade 6 in English and Mathematics.
